Welcome to the online home of Justin Glawe, independent journalist and founder of American Doom.

His recent investigations have exposed hundreds of election deniers serving as election officials across the country, efforts to delay certification of election results, coordination between election officials in Georgia and the Justice Department on election interference efforts, and ICE’s failure to report on deaths of immigrants in the agency’s custody.

You can find more of Glawe’s work at The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Zeteo, Mother Jones, The Bulwark and Public Notice. Over the last decade, Glawe has covered American unrest and upheaval for scores of publications, including The New York Times, the Washington Post, Esquire, The New Republic, VICE, the Daily Beast and more.

His first book will be published by the University of Georgia Press in June 2026. If I am Coming to Your Town, Something Terrible Has Happened: The Life and Times of a Domestic War Correspondent details Glawe’s journey into American violence and chaos while descending into a dark battle of his own—and the path to recovery for both the nation and himself.

Background

Glawe began his career in journalism in 2010 at his hometown newspaper, the Peoria Journal Star, writing about crime and daily life. From there he moved to the Bemidji Pioneer in Northern Minnesota, where he continued to report on crime as well as issues affecting the Native American community, primarily homelessness. After a brief stint in North Dakota, he set out as a freelancer in 2013.

He was in Ferguson for weeks following the death of Michael Brown and continued writing about police shootings across the country for the next two years before switching to covering national news events for The Daily Beast, VICE, Esquire and others. In 2014, he moved to Chicago and covered violence and police shootings — in addition to writing about his beloved Chicago Cubs — before moving to Texas in 2016.

For two years, Glawe covered immigration and the border extensively, often reporting from Juárez and El Paso. He now lives Savannah, Georgia, where he continues to report on immigration, has reported extensively on the election denial movement and efforts to interfere in U.S. elections, and has covered the issue of Gullah-Geechee land loss.

In his spare time, he plays guitar in his band, the Savannah Morning Blues.

Following the spring killings of spa workers in Atlanta, I went there to speak to the women and men who work in these quiet and often overlooked places. “America is getting worse,” one told me for my story in New York.
